Delhi to continue door to door survey to test symptomatic COVID patients

  • A door to door survey for identifying and testing symptomatic COVID-19 patients will continue in Delhi with focus on those aged above 50 years and having comorbidities, officials said on Thursday.
  • The survey was earlier conducted between October 20-24, covering over 57 lakh people in containment zones and hotspots to identify symptomatic persons and their contacts and test them.
  • The direction to continue the exercise was given in a meeting of the COVID-19 nodal officer with district magistrates on Wednesday, a senior Delhi government officer said.

Himachal reports sharp spike in daily COVID-19 cases

  • Himachal Pradesh on Thursday reported 931 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the hill state's tally to 3,7498, while 14 more people died due to the infection.
  • Shimla and Kangra registered four deaths each, Mandi three and Una, Kullu and Solan one each, according to the Health Department data. Of them, 10 were males and four females aged between 16 and 88.
  • A total of 913 patients recovered from the disease on Thursday, pushing the total number of recoveries to 28,993. Twenty-seven people have migrated and the death toll has reached 590, the Health Department said.

AstraZeneca CEO says co likely to run new global trial on COVID-19 vaccine

  • AstraZeneca Plc is likely to conduct an additional global trial to assess the efficacy of its Covid-19 vaccine, according to the company’s chief executive officer, after current studies raised questions over its level of protection.
  • The new trial would be run instead of adding an arm to an ongoing U.S. trial and would evaluate a lower dosage that performed better than a full amount in Astra’s studies. The company’s acknowledgment that the lower level was given in error fueled concerns, reports Bloomberg.

Gujarat records 1,560 new COVID-19 cases, highest one-day spike

  • Gujarat recorded 1,560 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the highest spike in a 24-hour period so far, the state health department said on Thursday evening. It took the case count in the state to 2,03,509.
  • With 16 patients succumbing to the infection during the day, the death toll due to the pandemic reached 3,922, it said.
  • As many as 1,302 patients recovered since Wednesday evening. Of the 16 patients who died during the day, 12 died in Ahmedabad city alone, followed by three in Surat and one in Vadodara.

  • West Bengal's COVID-19 toll rose to 8,224 on Thursday after 52 more people succumbed to the disease, a state health department official said.
  • The tally mounted to 4,70,498 after 3,507 fresh cases were reported from different districts.
  • Since Wednesday, 3,537 recoveries have been registered in the state, improving the discharge rate to 93.01 per cent, the department said in its bulletin.

  • Haryana reported 25 more fatalities due to COVID-19 on Thursday, taking the death toll to 2,316, while 2,122 fresh cases pushed the state's infection tally to 2,26,611.
  • Faridabad registered five deaths, Hisar, Jhajjar and Rohtak three each, and Gurgaon, Rewari, Panchkula, Kurukshetra and Jind districts two each, according to the state health department's daily bulletin.
