Covid positive rate rises to 5%, but troubled zones decline

The number of districts under high scrutiny for the spread of the infection, however, has reduced, ET has learnt. As many as 25 districts with a high number of Covid-19 positive cases were under strict vigil on May 22. As on June 1, there were only 17 of those with a positive rate of 20 or more.

New Delhi: India’s national Covid-19 positive rate is continuing to move up, standing at 5% as on June 1 compared with 4.6% ten days earlier. The weekly test positivity rate has also increased to close to 7%, from 6% on May 22.

The number of districts under high scrutiny for the spread of the infection, however, has reduced, ET has learnt. As many as 25 districts with a high number of Covid-19 positive cases were under strict vigil on May 22. As on June 1, there were only 17 of those with a positive rate of 20 or more.

Among cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad and Chennai have stayed consistently high on the positivity chart. Last week, Gurgaon also joined them with a rate of 20.7%.

DISTRICT DATA
Five districts from Maharashtra, nine in the national capital of Delhi, besides a district each from Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Haryana are under the Centre’s radar as they clocked the highest positive rate between May 26 to June 1.

Almost all districts of Delhi and Mumbai continue to lead the national tally.

The Mumbai Suburban district still records the country’s highest ratio at 44.4%, although it has seen an improvement from a reading of 52% on May 22.

The South East Delhi distr is next at 43.9%. Districts in and around Mumbai, North East Delhi, West Delhi, Shahdara, North West Delhi and Chennai all have record a positive rate of above 30%.

Raigad in Maharashtra and Chennai have shown much higher positive rates than the week before: moving up from 13% and 15% on May 22 to 20.9% and 31.4%, respectively, as on June 1. In terms of total Covid-positive cases, Mumbai is on top of the list - with over 9,000 cases recorded between May 26 and June 1, followed by Chennai (over 7,700), Thane (3,100) and Ahmedabad (2,500). Delhi’s West, North West and Central districts are in the 1,100-1,500 range.

STATE STORY
Delhi tops the test positive rate at 25.7%, followed by Telangana (20.2%), Maharashtra (19.85%) and Gujarat (11.8%). Tamil Nadu has a 10.3% positive rate.

Two new entrants on the watchlist are Bihar and Uttarakhand with a positivi rate of 10% and 8%, respectively. Officials in the know told ET that these two states saw a spike last week due to an influx of returning migrants and that things were quite under control.
