BENGALURU: Mohammed Mansoor Khan, the absconding founder of I Monetary Advisory (IMA) Jewels, has always resorted to video messages posted on the internet to reassure investors that his business was on track. He did this to good effect whenever his company came under the scanner of government agencies.

One such video published on YouTube seven months ago has Khan warning officials and the public against spreading rumours about his business. He released the video following a public notice issued by assistant commissioner LC Nagaraj against him and his associates for allegedly misusing investor money. In the video, Khan threatens to file a defamation case against authorities and assures the public that their investments are safe. In the video, Khan says: “I have neither got intimation nor a legal notice from the department that has now issued a public notice. The assistant commissioner’s action is atrocious. It is an act to sabotage the image of IMA. Defamation cases will be filed against officials and people who are mudslinging us on social media.” The video has about 7,000 views.

It turned out that Khan’s threat was an empty one. Nagaraj, the official Khan warns, told ET that his department had at that point taken the video seriously and had asked advocates to be prepared in case IMA filed a defamation. “Though we were certain the money collected from investors was being diverted, there was not a single complaint after the public notice,” the revenue official said.

Another video came out when investors became uneasy after IMA delayed payment of returns. This time, a representative of the company addressed investors in a one-minute-thirty-second video. In the video, which has 54,000 views, the unnamed functionary attributes the payment delay in March and April to the Lok Sabha election. “We have never delayed payment to our investors in the last 13 years. The trouble now in making payments is due to the strict rules of the Election Commission. There is so much checking (of vehicles) going on. Bringing and sending money is not possible. Have faith in God. Everything will be fine in two months,” the person says.

In the latest video released on June 23, Khan says he will put out a list of names of influential people who were his beneficiaries. The scam itself broke out after the release of an audio message on June 6 that was circulated over Whatsapp. The message, by Khan, says he will commit suicide. In Sunday’s video, Khan says his suicide threat was a “momentary thought” in frustration. Khan, said to be in Dubai, in his latest video message sent to the city police commissioner, said he will return and surrender to authorities in Bengaluru.
