MUMBAI: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday slammed rumours that claimed that newspapers were spreading the coronavirus and said that the rumours were ‘baseless’.

In a video statement released, Tope said, “ There are a numerous rumours being circulated that corona is being spread through social media and people are getting influenced by it. Corona is not spread through newspapers. There is no scientific truth in this and no scientific data supports this wrong claim.”said Tope.

The Maharashtra Health Minister elaborated on why the media was important specially in these times when information was quite crucial

“The media is known as the fourth pillar of democracy, they are getting us news. To form an opinion of them based on such rumours that have no scientific basis is very wrong.”said Tope.

He added, “ Don’t believe such rumours, touching, handling or reading newspapers does not infect you with corona. I am saying this will full confidence and speaking with all the scientific information on hand that newspapers does not give your corona.”said Tope.

The development comes as a rumour has spread that newspapers could give you the virus. The rumour that has spread through social media has been discounted by several health experts. World Health Organisation guidelines clearly mention that it is safe for people to receive packages like newspapers.

Newspaper manufacturing itself has become so automated that there is no issue of contamination. Even after production the hawker supply chains are completely sanitized.
