Gandhinagar: Preparations for Donald Trump’s visit has hit a feverish pitch as Ahmedabad gears up for what arguably is its biggest event in decades. Chief minister Vijay Rupani has been holding a series of meetings to oversee arrangements.

He held a high-level meeting on Thursday, where he was briefed by minister of state for home and top police officials on arrangements.

The US Secret Service and allied security agencies carried out a rehearsal along the 22-km route Trump and PM Modi would take on Monday. A security greenroom is being erected at the Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati.

Trump will be welcomed by Modi at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and will spend about 20 minutes there before the roadshow to reach the Gandhi Ashram.

Technology will be extensively used to ensure security, Ahmedabad Special Commissioner of Police Ajay Tomar said in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Apart from various handheld and doorframe detectors, Tomar said security agencies will use DRDO’s anti-drone technology.

Trump and his wife will be protected by seven layers of security. The US Secret Service will occupy the inner-most layer, followed by the Special Protection Group, National Security Guard, Anti-Terror Squad, Gujarat police’s commando force, Chetak, and the Gujarat Police. The traffic police will be deployed at the outermost periphery to ensure smooth flow.

Trump will reach Ahmedabad directly from Washington. The third Globemaster cargo aircraft of the US Air Force landed on Wednesday with security equipment and vehicles for the visit. District-wise colour codes have been assigned at the Motera stadium to make it easier for people to find their spots.
