Pradesh Congress Committee presidents and Congress Legislature Party leaders of the seven northeastern states held a meeting with Gandhi where Manmohan Singh, Ahmed Patel, AK Antony and AICC general secretaries KC Venugopal and Luzinho Faleiro too attended.
Congress is facing an unprecedented political and electoral meltdown in northeast, which used to be its political backyard till the Modi government took office. The party has to reinforce its defence on a series of tricky issues, including NRC and the Citizenship Amendment Bill that the Modi regime has unleashed as the RSS-BJP tightens its political grip in the region.
Later chief ministers of Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Puducherry met Gandhi and her senior colleagues. After reviewing the performances of the regimes, the meeting also decided that the Congress governments, while maintaining coordination with PCCs, should set an example in administrative matters, implementing manifesto promises including debtrelief for farmers, delivering social justice and maintaining law and order, especially in checking the activities of sectarian forces. A party insider said that the need to be vigilant about toppling bids on some Congress governments, Centre’s ‘vindictive actions’ against its leaders and the need for regular AICC-CMs meetings also figured at the meeting.
“In the prevailing dire socio-economic and political crisis in the country, perpetrated single-handedly by the BJP governments at the Centre and in various states, the states ruled by the Congress are not only the standing safe sanctuaries of democracy, people-centric governance and economic remonitisation, but also the strongest bulwark against BJP,” said an official statement after Sonia-CMs meeting.
