Sonia Gandhi to hold VC with PCC Chiefs just a day ahead of PM’s talks with CMs

Besides reviewing how state Congress units have been undertaking voluntary services during the lockdown, the meeting may also discuss the ways to campaign for more measures from the government, including increased help for the vulnerable sections and large-scale rapid tests, to tackle the outbreak.

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will hold a videoconference with all state party chiefs on Friday to get their views on the Covid-19 situation in their respective states and the lockdown.

This, incidentally, comes a day ahead of a meeting of chief ministers called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Besides reviewing how state Congress units have been undertaking voluntary services during the lockdown, the meeting may also discuss the ways to campaign for more measures from the government, including increased help for the vulnerable sections and large-scale rapid tests, to tackle the outbreak.

Gandhi had earlier held videoconferences with Congress Working Committee members and party chief ministers. While the exercise is meant to demonstrate how the Congress too is on the forefront of combating Covid-19, it has also led to whispers in the party about the practical utility of such tokenism, given the organisational functionaries of all political parties too are legally bound to remain confined to their houses due to the lockdown.

The Congress circles are already making fun of how the health ministers of Congress-ruled states, right in the middle of their supervision of the Covid-19 outbreak on the ground level, were in the past few days made to take guidance through videoconferencing on how to tackle Covid-19 issue by “luminaries” such as Sam Pitroda (connected from the US), K Raju (Rahul Gandhi’s aide) and MP Manish Tewari.

“The most dangerous thing now is to have quacks masquerading as anti-Covid-19 experts. We are caught between two acts: of Rahulji and Priyankaji being daily projected on social media as being more active than Modiji and CMs in tackling the Covid situation and that of some junior party colleagues playing doctors to state health ministers.

It indeed is a bizarre season," quipped an AICC functionary. The fact that Sonia Gandhi herself has called the state chiefs’ meeting — which will also be attended by the usual group of AICC functionaries including Rahul Gandhi — signalled rejection of the choreographed pitch made by some party functionaries during CWC meeting for Rahul Gandhi to directly call PCC chiefs’ meet.
