My wife Sumayya and I landed in Kerala from Dubai on March 18, before the lockdown. I did not have any symptoms or discomfort then. But there were quite a few positive cases in and around the shop I was working in at Dubai’s Naif locality, so I insisted that my wife, my nephew (who came back with me) and I get tested. We were tested two days later and got the results on 23rd. All three of us were positive.

We were taken to the government hospital in Kasargod soon after. By then, my wife had lost her sense of smell and taste but I was fine. After I was admitted, I developed a cough. I also had bad gastric pain, a kind of clenching in the stomach. My nephew, who is 26 years old, had no symptoms apart from a slight cold while he was in Dubai. I was given medicine for the gas issue and for my cough. A few days later, I think I was given hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. I was taking some four tablets a day. We were also given vitamin tablets.

At the hospital, we were given regular food - rusk in the morning, milk around noon, rice and curry for lunch and chapati for dinner. I was in the general ward with 30-odd patients while my wife was in a single room. She recovered her sense of smell after threefour days. We did not have any other symptoms. Even among the other patients in the ward, very few had symptoms like fever. In the tests done on the 9th and 11th of April, my results were negative so I was discharged on 12th April. My wife’s results took longer to be negative — she was discharged only on the 20th. I tried to stay back in the hospital to be with her but they did not permit that.

After the three of us came back home, we had to be in quarantine for another 14 days. We were alone in the house. I am not sure when we will be able to go back to Dubai. We are waiting to see how things will be.
