    Chennai: Tamil Nadu reported another day of Covid-19 cases being below the 4,000 mark with 3,680 people testing positive for the infection on Friday. This comes after a small spike of over 4,000 cases occurred on Thursday.

    However, the number of deaths continued to hover over the 60 mark with 64 people succumbed to the infection taking the death toll to 1829, the state media bulletin confirmed.

    According to the state media bulletin, the total number of cases in the state now stands at 1,30,261.

    Tamil Nadu lifted the complete lockdown in Chennai and neighbouring districts from Monday and eased relaxations across the state.

    Chennai has 74,969 cases in all, of which 1,205 cases were reported on Friday. The state capital has 21,766 active cases and had been under an intense lockdown from June 19 till July 5 along with neighbouring Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram.

    Madurai, which is currently the only district in the State that is continuing with a complete lockdown, recorded 192 cases on Friday.

    The bulletin said 4,163 people were discharged on Friday and that total recoveries in the state stood at 74,167.

    Testing has been a major focus of the government and the bulletin said 82,324 persons were tested on Wednesday.

    However, testing was at an all-time high on Thursday. The State bulletin said 41,038 persons were tested on Thursday, which has been the highest number of tests conducted in a single day. On Friday, 35,921 people were tested in Tamil Nadu.

    A general state-wide lockdown is in place till July 31, but the state government announced a slew of relaxations on Saturday.
