216 cases of triple talaq this month alone.
NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh police chief has asked senior police officers in districts to hold workshops with junior police personnel as well as prosecution officers to educate them about the new central law banning the practice of so-called triple talaq, or instance divorce prevalent among some Muslims, and implement it strictly in the state.

UP had reported the highest number of triple talaq cases before the enactment of the law at 201 cases since 2017, and even after the law came into being in July 31 with 216 cases this month alone.

Forwarding a copy of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 to superintendents of police in all districts in the state, director general of police OP Singh said in a circular, “All of you are directed to study the said provisions and hold a workshop with all station house officers, gazetted officers and prosecution wing officers in your jurisdiction to discuss the new law at length and ensure its strict compliance in the state.”

In another circular, issued to check any incidents of communal violence in the state, Singh asked for sensitive and hypersensitive areas to be identified in the state, and for information on parameters including “cases of inter-religious love affairs” and “religious conversions”. The other parameters were description of the population, history of any property dispute between two communities, possibility of conflict between two communities due to a procession route and past history of communal violence.

The DGP directed UP police to book under the National Security Act or Gangster Act persons who inflame passions, cancel their arm licences and even get their bail cancelled and send them to jail if they are out on bail in a case.

He asked for covering identified sensitive areas by CCTVs, posting adequate policemen in police posts and police stations in the area, and storing enough riot-control equipment such as tear gas, rubber bullets and body-protectors there.

Policemen have also been instructed to keep a watch around all religious places in areas including temples and mosques and to ensure no objectionable object is placed near such religious places. The DGP also asked for a close watch on social media to check spread of any rumours.

Girl missing after complaining against BJP leader

An FIR has been lodged against former Union minister and BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand after a law student has gone missing in UPs Shahjahanpur since three days after she put out a video on Facebook three days ago alleging sexual harassment by Chinmayanand. The UP DGP asked the district police chief to look into the case on priority and trace the girl, whose family said she might face a threat to her life. Meanwhile, the BJP leader has also lodged a first information report with police alleging that he received a call demanding Rs 5 crore along with the threat that unless he coughed up the money a video would be posted on the internet which might defame him.
