Police personnel investigate at the site where a rape victim was allegedly set ablaze by five men at Sindupur village in Unnao district, Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019.
UNNAO: A day after the 23-year-old Unnao rape survivor breathed her last at a hospital in Delhi, her 65-year-old father has demanded that the five accused get the same treatment given to the four who were accused of raping a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad.

However, the relatives of the five accused have alleged the entire case was staged and have demanded a CBI probe.

The survivor’s father, an ironsmith belonging to the Lohar community, told ET how the local police of Bihar village in Unnao district were callous whenever his daughter had approached them for help after being raped last year. The father and sister-in-law of the deceased have spoken of a caste power play at work as both the key accused — Shivam and Shubham — were Brahmins.

“I demand the culprits to be hanged or encountered. I want justice to be served quickly. The process should not take 10 years so that they can get the criminals out on bail using money power,” the deceased’s father told ANI here. “They should be punished in the same way my daughter lost her life after much pain. That is my last wish. That is the only way in which her soul will get relief.” Some villagers, mostly from a lower caste, claimed members of the Brahmin community behaved in a high-handed manner. Others, however, hinted at a consensual affair between the victim and one of the accused.

The Yogi Adityanath government has called for the case to be taken to a fast-track court and promised Rs 25 lakh for the family of the deceased. Sakshi Maharaj, BJP MP from Unnao, met with fierce resistance outside the victim’s house, mostly by Congress workers. Opposition parties attacked the government over the incident. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the family.
