White-topping, tenderSURE works to be probed
CM Yediyurappa says he has got several complaints about misappropriation of funds allocated for the projects.
In a letter to the urban development department made public on Monday, the newly elected chief minister said he received several complaints about misappropriation of funds allocated for white-topping and tenderSURE works. These two big-ticket projects were undertaken during the tenure of Siddaramaiah of the Congress and HD Kumaraswamy of the JD(S) as chief ministers.
While the Rs 643-crore tenderSURE project (phases I and II) is nearing completion, the phases I and II of the white-topping project — costing over Rs 1,490 crore — are is in different stages of implementation. Both the projects were projected as pedestrian- and motorist-friendly although there was opposition from certain quarters on account of their high cost.
Yediyurappa’s letter to the UDD follows his meeting with legislators and MPs from Bengaluru on August 14, the first after the BJP formed the government in the state. At the meeting, several BJP leaders opposed the white-topping project and also sought a probe into its implementation. The chief minister put on hold phase III of the white-topping project, days before it was to be awarded to the lowest bidder. Anil Kumar BH, additional chief secretary at the UDD, said he is not in receipt of the order from the CM’s office. “I can comment only after seeing the order,” he said.
