CHENNAI: The first-ever multinational futsal league is getting some star firepower for its marketing with Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman setting the music for an official anthem and Indian test team captain Virat Kohli singing in it.

Kohli, who co-owns Premier Futsal along with other stakeholders, said at a press conference in Chennai that he was passionate about the sport gaining ground in India.

He was confident that a relatively newer sport, Futsal is a five-a-side indoor version of football with a truncated playing time gathering a following in India.

"Once u hear the names of those who have agreed to join the popularity of the league will hit the roof," Kohli told at a press conference in Chennai.

He said he was a little nervous about lending his voice to the official anthem, but his discomfort was somewhat allayed by Rahman's reassuring words: "It is more like a rap.Do not be afraid," he told Kohli amid applause and cheer.

Rahman said he was particularly proud of his talent getting utilized in fields beyond films and music albums and entertainment. He was glad he could contribute to the promotion of a sport. "I have been doing sport-related music for some time now. Sports is a unifier," told Rahman.

Premier Futsal is promoted by Xavier Britto, the Chairman of Indev Group, which is into logistics and recently opened a private air-freight handling station for the Chennai airport.

Dinesh Raj, Managing Director of Premier Futsal, said large European footballers are being roped in to play for the eight franchises that will soon be announced.

"I can say that we have a very large marketing spend and investing in getting large, recognisable names to play for us," he said.

As of now, the Chennai franchise has been won by the owner of Chennai City Football Club, Rohit Ramesh, who was also present at the event.

Raj said there was enormous interest in owning the franchises and that details of new owners, star line-ups and the teams will emerge soon. The inaugural of Premier Futsal will take place in Chennai and the finals to be held in Kolkata.

Sony Pictures Network will broadcast the games live on their channels Sony Six, Sony ESPN and Sony AATH. The games begin mid-July.
