US legislators meet Nirmala Sitharaman, discuss visa regime
NEW DELHI: Eight American law makers met commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday and discussed issues such as visa fee hikes and limiting the number of H1B visas which are used to send professionals to the US on a temporary basis.

The meeting which comes a month after Donald Trump took over as the President of the US, is crucial because the Indian information technology industry has been under pressure with Trump's inward looking measures.

The bipartisan group of lawmakers is part of the delegation that is visiting India and meeting various ministers and companies.

Indian IT sector leaders are also meeting both U.S. lawmakers and officials from Trump’s administration to lobby against any major changes to visa regulations. The Indian IT industry gets 62% of its revenues from the US.

The visit is significant as it comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to the US to meet Trump in the middle of this year.
