Amazon wholesale India revenue declines 8% to Rs 11,232 crore in FY19

Meanwhile, Amazon Seller Services narrowed its losses, for the first time in India, to Rs 5,685 crore.

BENGALURU: Amazon Wholesale India, the local wholesale unit of the world’s top online retailer, reported an 8% drop in revenue to Rs 11,232 crore in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, a likely effect of the government’s revised foreign investment guidelines which came into effect in February.

Amazon Wholesale generates all of its revenue from sale of products to resellers. The government in February disallowed sellers on foreign-owned e-commerce marketplaces from purchasing more than 25% of their inventory from the group companies of the marketplace.

“Total revenue of the company in Financial Year 2018-19 fell to Rs 112,316 million (Rs 11,231.6 crore) in comparison of last year revenue of Rs 122,242 million (Rs 12,224.2 crore).

"Company is in the process (of) expanding its business and (the) management is confident of its future growth,” Amazon Wholesale’s filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) said.

Losses of Amazon’s wholesale unit widened to Rs 141 crore from Rs 131 crore in the previous year.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s marketplace unit, Amazon Seller Services, reported a smaller loss for the first time in India, regulatory filings accessed by ET showed.

Amazon Seller Services’ loss during fiscal year 2018-19 narrowed to Rs 5,685 crore from Rs 6,287 crore in the previous year, even as revenue rose 54% to Rs 7,593 crore. The loss reduced despite its expenses rising 15.6% to Rs 10,802 crore.

The higher expenses were largely attributed to increased spending on delivery, where it rose 23.8% to Rs 3,663 crore, and a 26.5% jump in legal fees to Rs 1,448 crore. Amazon Seller Services also spent Rs 2,331 crore on advertising and sales promotions in FY19. This was the second largest expense, after delivery. Revenue growth for the marketplace came across the board. Sales rose to Rs 3,832 crore in FY19 from Rs 2,846 crore the previous year. It recorded strong growth in marketplace services, where revenue rose nearly fourfold to Rs 951 crore.

Amazon Seller Services’ earnings from advertising doubled to Rs 905 crore in FY19 from Rs 453 crore. “The company also recognises revenue from providing space for advertisement on its website, which are recognised based on the number of clicks or impressions, and reported as other marketplace-related services,” Amazon Seller Services’ filing with the Registrar of Companies said.
