Flipkart cofounder acquires DHFL General Insurance

Flipkart co founder Sachin Bansal has been investing in various startups since 2014. He has bet on dockless scooter startups Vogo and Bounce, two-wheeler electric vehicle startup Ather Energy and Ola to name a few. He has now acquired DHFL General Insurance from Wadhawan Global Capital (WGC) for around Rs 100 crore. Meanwhile, Bansal said that he will deploy all the proceeds from the sale of his stake in Flipkart, into his financial services venture Navi Technologies, which has applied for a universal banking licence with the RBI. The financial services firm has sought the licence through a step-down subsidiary.

Starting a new venture

Bansal wants to invest in technology-driven businesses and with this in mind he founded BAC Acquisitions, which was later renamed as Navi Technologies, along with his IIT-Delhi batch-mate, Ankit Agarwal, in 2018. He also acquired a majority stake in Chaitanya Rural Intermediation Development Services, which runs a micro-finance platform and became its chief executive officer.

Hailing an Ola

Last year Sachin Bansal invested Rs 650 crore in ride-hailing company Ola, making it the largest personal investment in the domestic internet sector. This constituted more than 10% of his personal wealth garnered from the $16-billion Walmart-Flipkart deal. He now has a 2% stake in Ola. This was a part of Ola's Series J funding round.

Betting on Vogo, Bounce

In March last year Sachin Bansal has had put $3 million each in dockless scooter sharing startups Vogo and Bounce. Both the firms allows users to pick up scooters from designated pickup points, and drop them at any other designated point at the end of the ride. The scooters are fitted with technology that allows consumers to directly access or start the scooter, via its app. Vogo counts Matrix Partners, Kalaari Capital and Stellaris as its backers. It present in five cities across and claims to have completed more than 3 million rides. Vogo and Bounce claim to be clocking between 50,000-70,000 rides per day. (Pic: Vogo/Facebook)

Ather Energy: His earliest investment

In 2014 Sachin Bansal had invested $0.5 million in Ather Energy. This was one of his earliest startup investments as an angel investor in 2014. He is now on the board of this EV startup. In 2019, the electric scooter maker closed an investment of $51 million led by Bansal who invested $32 million.
