WhatsApp introduces new fingerprint lock for android phones

NEW DELHI: WhatsApp announced on Thursday it was introducing a new feature for android phones that allows users to unlock the app with fingerprints. The company said the feature provides an extra layer of security to prevent others from reading users' messages.

Earlier this year, the company said, it rolled out Touch ID and Face ID for iPhone users to provide an extra layer of security for WhatsApp users. "Today we’re introducing similar authentication, allowing you to unlock the app with your fingerprint, on supported Android phones," the company said in a statement.

To enable it, users have to tap settings, followed by clicking on the account option and then privacy and fingerprint lock. Users need to turn on unlock with fingerprint, and then confirm their fingerprint.

As per media reports, users testing the beta version on their phones could still reply to messages seen from notifications and could answer calls even when the app is locked. Users in the beta mode could choose the duration for which the app should stay unlocked after the opened it with fingerprint and could lock the app after 1 minute or 30 minutes. If they disabled the show content in notifications options in the beta testing, WhatsApp would no longer show the sender and message alerts if the fingerprint lock feature was enabled.
