  • In a departure from convention, the Rajya Sabha on Monday allowed leaders of various political parties to speak and pay tributes to five late members, including former finance minister Arun Jaitley.

    Some state governments have raised concerns regarding compensation on the GST. The states had pegged the pending dues at around Rs 50,000 crore. In this regard, representatives from various states held a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this month.

    The entire northeast has been given protection under the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the government's most prominent face from the region, Union minister Kiren Rijiju, said amidst protests across the northeastern states against the contentious bill.

    Removal of Prakash has come as a "surprise" for many in the party as he is considered close to Rajya Sabha member Vijay Goel. "The timing of the decision is questionable since Tiwari himself has completed his three-year term as the president of Delhi BJP. Jai Prakash is known for his closeness to Goel," said a top Delhi BJP leader.

    For the opposition Congress it is all too apparent as its units have been disbanded and the party has been functioning under Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda for quite some time now. Congress members say the new party structure will be formed after December 15.

    Political circles were abuzz since Sunday when Pankaja wrote a Facebook post on her "future journey" in view of changed political circumstances in Maharashtra where the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress came together to form a government. "I am not leaving the party. Defection is not in my blood," Pankaja told reporters.

    Union minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters that the claim of Chidambaram, who was released on bail on Wednesday, amounted to "self-certification". The Supreme Court had asked the Congress leader not to speak about the case against him while ordering his release on bail.
