"There is a parliamentary resolution, that entire Jammu and Kashmir region is a part of India. If Parliament wants it, then that area (PoK) also should belong to us. When we get orders to that effect, we will take appropriate action," the Army chief said while speaking to the media in Delhi.

  • "IAF will fully support it and will help in all the efforts that are required to bring in the jointness at the levels that are required...There are issues with training, logistics...there are areas already identified. We have done a lot in the recent past and we need to do much more and that effort will continue," Air Chief RKS Bhadauria said.

Rawat will be wearing the army’s olive green uniform. If the next CDS is from the air force and navy, the officer too will be wearing the uniform of his parent organisation. However, in the CDS’s uniform, the shoulder rank badges, belt buckle, peak cap and buttons on the working dress will symbolise the three services.

The government’s own press release defines the CDS appointment as a “landmark” decision. CDS will give “effective leadership” to the services at the top level of decision making, improve coordination amongst the three services, and prepare them better to deal with rapidly changing security environment and the changing nature of warfare.

Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said that there is no politicisation of the defence forces, which have been apolitical. On Monday, the CDS, General Bipin Rawat, had said that the armed forces stayed away from politics and worked on the directives of the government. Naravane also said that there is scope of decreasing ceremonial activities.

"A momentous and historic day for India as PM @narendramodi ji fulfils yet another long-pending demand and India gets its First Chief of Defence Staff. I am confident that this decision will further strengthen India's resolve to be among the best defence forces in the world," Shah said. The home minister also congratulated General Bipin Rawat, on taking charge as India's first CDS.

General Rawat, who completed a three-year tenure as Army Chief, was on Monday named as the country's first CDS. The new department will have under it works relating to the three forces -- Army, Navy and Air Force -- and procurement exclusive to the services, except capital acquisitions, according to prevalent rules and procedures, the order said.

Javadekar said Congress was a confused party and its leaders talked on different notes. "Rahul Gandhi's tweets are done by his advisors while Congress people speaks different things. That's why Congress is a confused party," Javadekar said, while reacting to Congress opposition to the CDS.

"I am quite confident that we will be successful in developing an indigenous Indian Industry that will ensure...which I have often repeatedly said...that we will win the future wars with Indian systems," Rawat said. General Rawat asserted that the Indian Army, therefore, has to remain at the forefront of technological embrace.

General Rawat's appointment to the newly created post came a day before he was due to retire following a three-year tenure as the Army Chief during which he initiated a series of reforms in the 1.3 million-strong force besides following a policy of "hot pursuit" in dealing with cross border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Creation of the Department of Military Affairs with requisite military expertise and institutionalisation of the post of CDS is a momentous and comprehensive reform that will help our country face the ever-changing challenges of modern warfare," the prime minister tweeted.

Union Cabinet Committee on Security today approved the creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)– a four star position being ...
