Amidst shortage, institutes make their own hand sanitisers

  • Five institutions from India have been ranked among the top 100 this year, while in 2019 there were three, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras. This year IIT Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) is at 86th, IIT Madras (IITM) at 88 and IIT Kanpur (IITK) at 96. While IIT Bombay has been ranked 44, IIT Delhi has bagged the 47th rank.

    IIT Madras and German university RWTH Aachen offer a dual degree program, with student-exchanges between the two institutes. The exchange students are expected to go through an industry internship in both Germany and India.

    “Alumni have made a big difference to several of our research and teaching initiatives at IIT Madras. This interdisciplinary lab on robotics will help train several generations of students for our emerging high tech workforce,” said Mahesh Panchagnula, dean (International and Alumni Relations) at IIT Madras.

    Altair will provide the technology access and mentorship to select startup companies for one year formed under the incubation cell and will institute an award for a startup that best utilizes simulation technology during the year.

    The joint initiative, which has been named ‘Innovation-Venturing and Entrepreneurship in India Network,’ includes as its founding members faculty at IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta and IIM Kozhikode. The network of institutions will leverage strengths of the partners and would work with other stakeholders.

    The two Indian institutes that are participating in this project are IIT Madras and IIIT Delhi. IIT Madras is looking to use AI to help the NGO Armman to build predictive models that could prevent those who enrol for the healthcare programme from dropping out.

    IIT Madras Incubation Cell also joined the round as a part of its Seed Support Funding Scheme to its incubatees. The founder promoters also participated in the round. The startup was co-founded by Thillai Rajan, co-founder of YNOS and Professor of IIT Madras, who is also an Associate at the Mossavar-Rahmani Centre for Business and Government, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University.

    Educationists and marketing pundits concur that expressing dissent on campuses by students through protests is normal, and acceptable. However, some caution when protests stretch too long and send the functioning of an institute into a tailspin, it can potentially impact the reputation of the institute.

    The institute also claimed that it has made progress in indigenous processor called 'Shakti' to building the next generation of Artillery Combat Command and Control Network. The fire control network has been proposed to be based on Shakti Processor in a lightweight tablet configuration.

    "Sterlite Technologies Ltd (STL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Madras for sponsoring a chair professorship in 5G," the company said in a filing to BSE.

    Including the accepted Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), a total of 848 students have already been placed at the end of Phase I Placements for 2019-20 Academic Year. This is around the same as last year (2018-19) when 844 students had been placed at the end of Phase I, the institute said. The jobs include 34 offers to work from locations abroad, the institute said in a release.

    The premiere institutions - IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay are not the regular ones to join protests and usually stay away from agitations.
