8,171 new Covid cases in past 24 hours, India now 7th worst-hit

Even as the number of cases and deaths rose sharply over the past few days, the the fatality rate in India (based on latest figures) fell to 2.83% from 3.3% about a month and a half ago. The recovery rate, on the other hand, has now reached 48.2% amongst patients, up from 38.3% on May 18, from 26.6% on May 3, and from 11.4% on April 15.

    Schaeffler procured and donated emergency medical equipment and essentials for a government run hospital (Aundh hospital) in Pune city. The Aundh Hospital that specializes in treating of diseases related to the respiratory system has been identified as a dedicated COVID-19 hospital by the ministry.

    As per government data, over 50% of Covid fatalities in India were among the country's elderly (60+) who make up only 10% of the total population. 73% of total deaths were among those who had co-morbidities. The data, made public yesterday, showed that 38% of total deaths were in the 60-74 age group (8% of India's population).

    The government racked up a budget deficit of 4.6% of GDP in the fiscal year that ended in March.

    Yarn exports fell between 80-90% in April and about 30% during the quarter ended March as imports by China, which accounts for a third of India’s yarn exports fell as garment units there shuttered. Imports by Bangladesh, which accounts for nearly a fifth of India’s yarn exports, also declined, according to a Crisil Research report.

    Coronavirus cases would have crossed a million had the lockdown not been in place, say officials.

    The total number of cases is 81,970, with casualties so far being 2,649, according to the latest govt update. As many as 27,920 have been cured/discharged, the govt website showed. At 27,524, Maharashtra continued to have the most cases by far, followed by Gujarat with 9,591 cases and Delhi with 8,470.

    "It is hard to imagine how the world would have coped with such a disruption by COVID-19 without the digital tools that we possess today. Hence, technology and digital people-centric solutions should become a critical component of our development paradigm," India's Permanent Representative to the UN said at the 2020 Annual Session of UNDP.

    The ongoing research project - in collaboration with the Google Research team in the United States and the University of Virginia -- is studying anonymised and aggregated data of mobility patterns and will be deployed later to form various simulations, Manish Gupta, Director of Google Research, India told ET in an interview.

    "We were clocking high double-digit sales growth till 2018. But 2019 has been slow for us at just about 9-10%. Consumer sentiment is mellow. Our product portfolio is priced between Rs 15000 and Rs 50 lakh. The impact of the low sentiment was felt most in the Rs 20,000 to Rs 1 lakh price point. The least impact was noted in the luxury segment which tells a story."

    Out of the 121 passengers aboard flight AI 140, some 85 of them would take a connecting flight to Kochi on Tuesday from Delhi. Most of the Kochi passengers are caregivers who have wished to be quarantined close to their home.

    The overall perception on the crisis recovery is 'good' on health front and 'poor' on the economic front, said a report by market research firm TRA Research, which is into consumer insights and brand analytics.
