  • Gross enrolments of new subscribers with ESIC were 1.49 crore during the entire financial year 2018-19, the National Statistical Office (NSO) said in a report. It also showed that during the September 2017-October 2019 period, around 3.22 crore new subscribers joined the ESIC scheme. The report showed that gross new enrolments with ESIC during the September 2017-March 2018 period were 83.35 lakh.

    The survey on ‘Household Social Consumption: Education’ conducted by the NSO showed that in rural areas, among persons of 5 years and above, 9.9% were able to operate a computer and in urban areas, for the same group, 32.4% were able to operate a computer during the last 30 days before the survey period.

    "In government/public hospitals, the expenditure was about Rs 4,452 (about Rs 4,290 in rural and Rs 4,837 in urban areas). In private hospitals, the expenditure was about Rs 31,845 (about Rs 27,347 in rural and Rs 38,822 in urban areas)," stated NSO's 75th round of National Sample Survey on Household Social Consumption related to Health.

    The literacy rate among those in the age group of seven years and above was recorded at 77.7 per cent during July 2017-June 2018 in the country, showed a National Statistical Office (NSO) survey on Saturday. This rate was 73.5 per cent in rural and 87.7 pe cent in urban areas, showed the NSO survey on Household Social Consumption: Education.

    The govt wants to audit WhatsApp's security systems over the spying row, the IT minister has said.

    Govindacharya has also written to Ravi Shankar Prasad seeking NIA investigation against FB, WhatsApp, NSO Group Technologies, and Q Cyber Technologies for compromising with public data. Govindacharya has also said that from the pleadings of WhatsApp before the US district court, it is clear that WhatsApp is not secure and that its systems were compromised.

    NSO Group says that it is a supplier of surveillance tools to governments and law enforcers, and its products tackle and prevent serious crimes and support search and rescue operations after natural disasters.

    The government is nevertheless planning to issue a notice to Google asking why it had not informed the authorities about the attack. It will also seek details of the cyber attack and its impact on Indian users. Phishing is defined as a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as user names, passwords by masquerading as a trustworthy entity.
