  • The bench said all relevant material including judgements pronounced by trial court, high court and Supreme Court were placed before the President when he was considering the mercy plea of the convict.

    Tax authorities under the Delhi CGST zone unearthed the two cases, one of which involved issuing of fake invoices for fraudulently availing ITC – where four people were arrested including an authortised signatory – while the other involved clandestine removal of goods without issuing invoices. In the second case, the proprietor has been arrested.

    The apex court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict at 10:30 am on Wednesday on a separate plea filed by another death row convict in the case, Mukhesh Kumar Singh ,who has challenged the rejection of his mercy petition by the President.

    "I have filed mercy petition for Vinay before the President. I have submitted it by hand," rape convict Vinay's lawyer said. Before Vinay, another death row convict Mukesh Kumar Singh had filed the mercy plea which was rejected by the President on January 17.

    According to sources, each time the execution is deferred, the jail authorities have to spend nearly Rs 50,000 on fresh preparations. On Tuesday, the four convicts were asked to mention the dates of their last meeting with their family members. The hangman has already been asked to arrive by Friday.

    The observations came when Solicitor General Tushar Mehta mentioned the case before the bench, saying that in pursuance of the court's earlier direction a meeting of lawyers took place but it could not finalise the common legal questions for consideration of the nine-judge bench.

    The development comes in the backdrop of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) finding that the recent violent protests in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act had an alleged "financial link" with PFI but the organisation had termed this as "baseless".
