  • Samajwadi Party snatched one seat each from the BJP and the Bahujan Samaj Party in the first set of electoral battles since BSP leader Mayawati snapped the alliance with SP.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav denied the allegations that put him under scanner for transferring UP power employees' provident fund to scam-hit housing finance company DHFL. Over Rs 2,600 crore of the state power employees' provident fund was reportedly invested in the scam-hit DHFL, prompting the state government to order a CBI probe

Shrikant Sharma said “all options are being seriously explored” by the state government to recover the Rs 2,267 crore lying with DHFL. Sharma said the state government will hold UPPCL responsible as the trust run under the autonomous body accepts that rules were violated while investing in DHFL.

Facing opposition's attack over the investment of the part of the UP power corporation employees' provident fund in DHFL, the Uttar Pradesh government sought to set the records straight, asserting that the "dubious" decision was taken by Akhilesh Yadav government in April 2014 and the process of investment was further carried forward during 2016.

In 2016, a statue of dreaded dacoit Dadua and his wife was installed in a Hanuman Temple in Narsinghpur Kabraha village, Fatehpur district. A retired DGP said that this was a very dangerous trend that needed to be nipped in the bud.

On joining the party, Rukamani Devi Nishad said that she feels like coming home.

Of the 11 seats of the state where bypolls were held, eight were held by the BJP and one by ally Apna Dal (Sonelal). Two other seats were shared by the SP and the BSP. The bypolls were mostly necessitated after legislators got elected to the LS.

The BJP is leading in Lucknow Cantt, Manikpur, Balha, Govind Nagar, Ghosi and in Pratapgarh where its ally, the Apna Dal candidate is leading. The Samajwadi Party (SP) is leading in Rampur where Tanzeen Fatima, wife of SP MP Azam Khan, is the candidate.

Political analysts say that Shivpal Singh Yadav had tried to show his strength by contesting the Lok Sabha elections with the PSPL, but he did not succeed.

The ruling BJP will try to build on its Lok Sabha success, the opposition parties hope the results will help them galvanise its cadres ahead of the 2022 elections for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Leader of Opposition and SP leader Ram Govind Chowdhury had given a petition to the Assembly speaker for disqualification of Shivpal Yadav last month.

One more Congress MP, K C Ramamurthy, quit his party on Wednesday and BJP sources said they expect more desertion from opposition ranks as political parties gear up for Parliament's Winter Session.
