    • Indian warships are conducting a short passage exercise (PASSEX) with the US Nimitz carrier strike group that is making its way from the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean, symbolising the close strategic partnership between the two nations.

      In a strong strategic signal to China, a US carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is set to conduct an exercise with Indian warships near the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. The PASSEX (passing exercise) between the two navies, comes after the mammoth nuclear-powered USS Nimitz and her accompanying warships entered the Indian Ocean on Saturday.

      The troops of India and China are locked in a standoff in several areas along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh since May 5. The situation deteriorated last month following the Galwan Valley clashes that left 20 Indian Army personnel dead.

      The Arabian Sea region is strategically important for India as major ports including Kandla, Okha , Mumbai, Nhava Sheva (Navi Mumbai), Mormugão, New Mangalore, and Kochi are located there. The joint maritime exercises began on Monday in the North Arabian Sea, regarded strategically significant for China which is now developing Pakistan's deep water Gwadar port there.

      Sources on Friday said several Indian warships, including destroyers, frigates and submarines as well as maritime patrol aircraft, are conducting the exercise near the A&N archipelago, which dominates China’s critical sea lanes transporting the bulk of its energy and other trade through the Malacca Strait.

      Defence ministry sources say the Navy is the first among the armed forces to finalise a rationalisation plan for its capital acquisition projects, which ranges from withdrawing some tenders or Request for Proposals (RFPs) to reducing numbers in other mega programmes.

      The missile system is being developed by DRDO for the Arihant class nuclear submarines which are being built. "As per plans, the DRDO will carry out test-firing of the K-4 nuclear missile from an underwater platform off the Vishakhapatnam coast. During the trial, the DRDO will test the advanced systems in the missile system," govt sources said.

      No fewer than 23 modern surface warships were launched by China in 2019, this total including nine destroyers (two Type 055s and seven Type 052Ds), twelve Type 056 corvettes, one Type 075 landing helicopter dock and one Type 071 landing platform dock. Notable was the absence of any Type 054A frigate construction with production having temporarily halted.
