DoT pares telecom revenue estimate by 70% to Rs 40,000 cr

The govet expects to net around Rs 40,000 crore from telecom sector this fiscal, less than a third of the budget estimate of Rs 1.33 lakh crore, mainly due to the absence of 5G airwaves in next auctions and limited payments towards past AGR dues.

    • Bharti Airtel on Wednesday informed customers that “effective January 15, it would be “mandatory to prefix `0’ before the mobile number while dialling from a landline," as per a DoT directive. Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio, state-run BSNL and MTNL are likely to do the same.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) sources said telcos, including Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea, attended the pre-bid conference on Tuesday. The department has now asked the operators to send their written queries on the issues raised at the pre-bid conference by January 15.

"The present application is being filed inter alia, seeking clarification/ modification of the judgment of this court dated 01/09/ 2020..... and other connected matters to a limited extent of allowing to carry out corrections relating to manifest/clerical/ arithmetic errors, etc. In the computation of applicant's adjusted gross revenue," Vodafone Idea said its petition that ET has seen.

Credit Suisse further expects Reliance Jio to purchase additional spectrum beyond expiring airwaves as it will look to augment its network capacity, having garnered 35% subscriber market share and a much higher share of traffic. It added that Bharti Airtel has 12 MHz and 47 MHz of spectrum expiring across 900 and 1800 MHz bands respectively.

Loss-making Vi, the worst hit by the AGR case ruling of October 2019 which left it facing the most dues among telcos, follows rival Bharti Airtel in highlighting what it claims are calculation mistakes. But unlike its competitor, it has not called on the top court to recall its earlier "mistaken" orders.

In terms of latency, Airtel was the most responsive network with a delay of 24 millisecond, followed by Vi’s 26.5 millisecond and Jio’s 28.5 milliseconds. Latency is a measure of round-trip delay in transfer of each data packet from source to destination.

The latest battle of words between telcos comes at a time when Jio has requested the telecom department to suspend mobile number portability in Punjab and Haryana.

"We request all Vi 3G customers to visit the nearest retail outlet at the earliest to upgrade to a 4G SIM, free of cost and start experiencing the full potential of Vi GIGAnet 4G," Rajendra Chourasia, Operations Director- Mumbai, Vodafone Idea said in a statement.

On December 4, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had directed all telcos to submit details of all segmented offers made between January and November 2020, including offer name, tariff rates, terms and conditions, validity spans and benefits within 15 days.

A first for an Indian telco, the partnership allows "Vi to leverage Firework's content repository from global content studios and also get access to unique occupational generated content creators who are expert storytellers across a wide genre of subjects," said the operator in a statement on Tuesday.

The move to expand the global lender consortium is aimed at quickly filling up Vi’s sizable funding requirement and also distributing the risk exposure across a larger pool of financiers, one of the people told ET.

Delhi High Court had asked the Centre at an earlier hearing to state whether it would challenge the arbitration award in favour of Vodafone. The Centre then sought additional time to respond.
