  • The seven Generals, including one who had served as a defence attache in Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, were opposed to granting a three-year extension to Bajwa as this would spoil their chances for the coveted post. If Bajwa would get an extension for three years, the most senior Generals will not remain eligible for the post of Army Chief.

The Indian Army had sent a proposal to the Defence Ministry for approval. The ministry, after approving it, further sent it to the Cabinet for clearance, but due to technical reasons it has not been approved and sent back, sources said. "The Army needs approval for three posts from Cabinet as these are joint secretary level and above posts."

While Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 19 had approved an extension in the tenure of General Bajwa for another three years.Chief, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa suspended the government's notification, and adjourned the hearing until Wednesday. The move came just ahead of Bajwa's retirement on November 29.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa in its short order directed the government to bring necessary legislation within six months' time, Geo TV reported. Bajwa's original three-year tenure is set to expire on Thursday at midnight and he can now continue as the Army chief for another six months.

During Thursday's hearing, the court directed the government to present a new summary for the extension in Bajwa's service. The bench also directed that the new summary should not mention any time period for which the service of army chief would be extended.

Wang, just 27 years old, claimed to have had a hand in the kidnappings of the Causeway Bay booksellers in Hong Kong, infiltrating Hong Kong student organizations, and conducting information operations in Taiwan. These were impressive scalps for one of such a tender age in the intelligence community. Indeed, he asserted he was the "boss" of a cyber army in Taiwan.

If Khan continues to bank on one General or the other to stay in power, rather than taking the Opposition into confidence on the issues affecting Pakistan, he would put whatever is left of democracy in Pakistan in peril.
