Dharavi's journey to becoming Mumbai s COVID-19 hotspot
It has just been 43 days since the city's most congested ward detected its first case at Dr Baliga Nagar on April 1, setting the alarm bells ringing for the city's administration. The progression was, however, slow in the area and it took a little over a fortnight for Dharavi to add 100 cases to its tally and by May 3, it crossed the 500 mark.
3 to 19: Dharavi sees 6-fold jump in doubling rate
Dharavi reported its first Covid case on April 1. By mid-April, there were almost 100 positive cases. From April 27 to May 15, the G North Ward where Dharavi is located reported on an average 95 positive cases, a majority of which were in the slum cluster. The number has now fallen to 25 cases.

The time taken for cases to double in 24 of the city’s 27 wards has increased to over 16 days in the past week. The growth rate of Covid-19 cases in Mumbai slowed to 3% in the June 8-14 period from 5% during May 22-27.

Currently, the only quarantine facility in Dharavi is a nearby sports complex with a capacity of 1,200 persons only, less than half the number of people the central team wanted tested in Dharavi.

One of them, aged 29, is the wife of a doctor who tested positive earlier in Vaibhav Nagar, while the other, aged 31, is a resident of the Kalyanwadi locality, officials said. "Two people who figure in the list of police who returned from Markaz (Tablighi Jamaat's event at its headquarters in Nizamuddin, Delhi) were also found positive," said a senior BMC official.
