    Yogi Adityanath directed government officials on Wednesday to create work under the Centre’s flagship rural jobs scheme to generate large scale employment, even as the state looks at getting large industrial units and MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) as well as developmental projects such as expressways, public works department and irrigation works to absorb part of the large influx.

    The International Labour Organisation, on Wednesday, said tens of millions of migrant workers who have been forced to return home because of the COVID-19 pandemic after losing their jobs face unemployment and poverty in their home countries.

    ​​“The ministry maintains a database of Indian workers who travel overseas to work,” said Sanjay Bhattacharyya, secretary, consular, passport & visa and overseas Indian affairs, in MEA.

    "At least 15,500 workers are coming back to Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad and other parts of the state every day," the MahaHome Minister Anil Deshmukh said in a statement.

    Companies are promising benefits such as free travel tickets, housing and food to draw workers to urban areas.

    As per the National Sample Survey Office report on migration in India, almost 55% households in rural areas and 67% in urban areas migrated for employment-related reasons in 2007-08. The survey was conducted between July 2007 and June 2008, and covered a sample of over 572,000 people.

    The Foundation has set aside Rs 2 crore for the project that aims to handhold migrants who have returned to their homes from Bengaluru after the coronavirus outbreak. The foundation said it would scale up the programme if banks, government institutions and cooperative societies lend a helping hand.

    Lauding their work, Modi said that the BJP as an organisation is not meant to only win elections but do ‘sewa’ to people. Party units in Assam, UP, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Delhi attended this stock-taking, which was conducted by a ‘Vishal Jansabha’ and was attended by all senior party leaders.

    "(Migrant) Labourers have returned to their home states just with their clothes. They may come back after some time. At present we have enough labor force to supply to our industries," Subhash Desai said, speaking to reporters. "But if the labourers from other states return, they will need to register their names here," he added.

    Almost empty hands now, a number of migrant workers have themselves evinced interest to return back.
