  • Sales of petrol cars could likely grow at the expense of diesel cars after the transition, say experts.

In passenger vehicles, an easing in the pace of decline in December, though on a low base, and an improvement in the rolling average in the last three months of the year led the industry to suggest that the worst may be over.

The premium SUV market in India has bucked the trend in the overall passenger vehicle sales, growing by a third in the past year as consumers upgraded to large, feature-rich products like the MG Hector and Tata Harrier.

Sales of luxury cars in India declined by about 15% last year — the steepest drop in more than a decade.

"As a new entrant in the Indian market, the robust sales momentum of our first offering, the Hector, has been very encouraging. We are working closely with our global and local suppliers to increase the production of the Hector in 2020 to support the booking backlog," said Rakesh Sidana, director for sales, MG Motor India.

Mahindra & Mahindra retained its third spot in the Indian passenger vehicle market in the first nine months of 2019-20, and increased its lead over fourth-placed Tata Motors.

Both the B (B772) and C segment SUVs (W601), which are under development for the JV company, will be shared by Ssangyong Motor Company. Similarly, products made by Ssangyong may be used by Ford for the global markets. A senior management of Ford may soon be visiting Korea to discuss the execution of this plan, new resports said.

"A lot of opportunities have opened up, thanks to the government’s 2,500 cars import regulation without homologation. It can open up new segments for us. This can also help us in experimenting with products, the E-Tron electric SUV for example", said Balbir Singh Dhillon.

ET had reported in November that the Franco-Japanese alliance factory Renault Nissan Automotive India was targeting to close the current fiscal with 15% jump in production on the back of strong exports demand for the Nissan Sunny and local demand for the Renault Triber.

In a market where passenger vehicle sales shrank 18% since the fiscal year started in April, Tata Motors' sales fell 25-30%.

German automobile company Audi is cautiously optimistic about the year that will mark the transition to stricter emission norm BS-VI. "In terms of growth estimates for the luxury car market, we estimate it to remain flat in 2020 and we are hopeful of positive growth starting 2021," Audi India Head Balbir Singh Dhillon said.

Tata Motors is confident that EVs are getting more affordable in India, especially in the fleet segment. It’s a different story in the personal segment for individual buyers. This is because GoI incentivizes commercial fleet-owners with FAME II and GST concessions. Individual buyers are eligible only for a few tax concessions.
