      Battling the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic while facing shortages of existing vaccines, India has approved the use of Russian "Sputnik V" vaccine. The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) had met to take up Sputnik V application for Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) in India. It is to be noted that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) will take a final call on the recommendation. If approved, it will be the third COVID-19 vaccine to be available in India. The committee, set up by the government, looked into Dr Reddy's application seeking approval for the vaccine to be used in India. The Russian vaccine has an effectiveness of 91.6 per cent. Dr Reddy's Lab has partnered with the Russia Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to bring the Sputnik V vaccine to India and other countries.

      According to a report by PTI, nearly seven per cent of India's population aged ten and above was exposed to SARS-CoV-2, amounting to an estimated 74.3 million infections by August, with the seroprevalence being highest in urban slum areas followed by urban non-slum and rural areas, the findings of ICMR's second national serosurvey stated.
