Steve Smith kept Australia on course with a typically busy 98 before dragging the ball onto his stumps and the tourists were all out for 304 in the final over. The Indian top order had powered the hosts to 340-6 with opener Shikhar Dhawan (96) laying the foundation and KL Rahul providing the late assault with a whirlwind 80 at number five.

Dhoni fans, left disappointed with the news, expressed their emotions on social media.

Indian captain Virat Kohli won the 'Spirit of Cricket' award for stopping fans from booing Australia's Steve Smith during their World Cup match at the Oval, the ICC said in a statement.

The BCCI announced the central contract for the period of October 2019 to September 2020. Dhoni was in the A category, which fetches a player Rs 5 crore, until last year. Skipper Virat Kohli, his deputy Rohit Sharma and top pacer Jasprit Bumrah were retained in the highest A+ bracket of Rs 7 crore.

Pujara was placed sixth, down one rung, with 791 points, while Rahane occupied the ninth spot after slipping a couple of positions with 759 points. In bowling, India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, returning from an injury layoff, remained static at sixth position with 794 points, while spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (772 points) and seamer Mohammed Shami (771) were ninth and 10th respectively.

Australia openers David Warner and Aaron Finch both hit centuries to complement their bowlers' inspired display as the touring side handed out a 10-wicket thrashing to India in the opening one-day international on Tuesday.

At a time when bilateral ODI series are fast losing relevance, the three-match rubber between two top teams could give a fresh lease of life to the format. The high-voltage rivalries that fans enjoy will be back as Rohit Sharma's elegance will be pitted against enforcer David Warner while the Virat Kohli vs Steve Smith duel will resume in earnest.

Rohit & Rahul are in great form; Dhawan is back among runs. So who should be picked as openers? Kohli and Shashtri need to be diplomatic in selection for the team's sake.

With 928 points, Kohli is way ahead of second-placed Australian maestro Steve Smith (911) and New Zealand's inspirational skipper Kane Williamson (822), while Australia's Marnus Labuschagne, who has amassed 1,085 runs in 11 Tests this year, improved a place to grab the fourth spot. Pujara was placed fifth with 791 points, while Ajinkya Rahane was joint seventh with 759 points.

"I’m very happy with the players that we have selected and really looking forward to the new season. We've had a lot of discussions on the structure and balance of the team and this looks like a good start for us," Kohli said. "I believe it all comes down to every individual to give out their best performance during the league," Virat Kohli added.
