Nowadays internships are more than just a way to fill time during summer breaks. These temporary stints with companies help you learn more about the prospects in the job market.

Internships also help you understand what your employer will expect from you once you actually start working.

If your internship is successful, you could get a job offer from the company as well. Want to be a successful intern? Here are five things you must remember.

  • Be punctual
Arrive on time, meet deadlines and never be in a hurry to leave offi ce early. Punctuality will speak for your sincerity. Treat your short-term project as a fulltime job to build rapport.

  • Take initiative
Seek more work. Approach your manager and tell him about the areas you want to work in. Pitch new ideas even without being asked and offer to help where you see a problem. Initiatives from interns are seen as a sign of confi dence and eagerness.

  • Enthusiasm is key
Whether the task given to you is trivial or challenging, give it your best shot. Don’t treat any work as menial or decline just because it does not interest you. Chances are your employer will perceive it as conceit and never call you back. Enthusiasm is the most praised trait in young talent.

  • Don’t frown at criticism
Don’t expect people to be lenient because you are an intern. Be open to criticism and own up to errors. Both positive and negative feedbacks are part of the learning process. Trying to duck responsibilities will poorly refl ect on your professionalism.

  • Build connections
Build a strong network within the organisation for the future. You can reach out to your supervisor for recommendations when you start looking for jobs.
