    How to activate UAN for your EPF account

    Synopsis

    To access various services on the EPFO's member sewa portal, your UAN must be activated. Here's how to do it.

    To use the various online services related offered by the EPFO related to your EPF account, your UAN must be activated. There are many services that can be accessed through the online portal of Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Some of these services include making nomination for your Employees' Provident Fund account (EPF) and Employees Pension Scheme (EPS), filing EPF /EPS claim online, accessing your EPF passbook of your account and so on.

    However, to access these services on the EPFO's member sewa portal, your UAN must be activated. UAN stands for Universal Account Number. UAN helps you to keep track of the EPF accounts opened by the different organisations you have worked for.

    An organisation creates a new EPF member ID to put in the EPF contributions of an employee. This member ID is the employee's EPF account number. Different account numbers are created over a period of time by different employers.

    For instance, while switching your job, your new company will open a new EPF account for you to deposit your EPF contribution. However, while opening the EPF account, you can provide your existing UAN to be able to easily merge all your previous EPF accounts opened during your working life.

    How to activate UAN
    Step 1: Go to member sewa portal website: https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
    Step 2: Click on the 'Activate UAN' option given below the login credentials.

    Step 3: A new webpage will open on your computer screen. You will be required to enter any one - UAN, Member ID, Aadhaar or PAN. Next, you will be required to enter other details - Name, date of birth, mobile number and email ID. Remember the details must be entered as per EPFO's records.

    Step 4: Enter the captcha code and click on 'Get Authorization Pin'.
    Step 5: An SMS will be sent on mobile number with an OTP (one-time password) or PIN.
    Step 6: Enter the OTP and click on 'Validate OTP and Activate UAN'.
    Step 7: Once your UAN is activated, password to your account on the member sewa portal will be sent on your mobile via SMS.

    Use the password to login to your account to avail the services online.

    If you have forgotten your UAN or misplaced it or you have forgotten whether you have activated your UAN or not, then you can check the status of the same on the member sewa portal.

    Follow the steps below to check the status of your UAN.
    Step 1: Visit www. https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
    Step 2: Click on 'Know your UAN status'.
    Step 3: A new webpage will open on your computer. Enter either member ID or Aadhaar or PAN.

    Step 4: Enter other details - name, date of birth, mobile number and email ID (optional).
    Step 5: Enter captcha code.
    Step 5: Click on 'Get Authorization Pin'.
    Step 6: An OTP will be sent on your mobile number. Enter the OTP and check box 'I Agree'.
    Step 7: Click on 'Validate OTP and get UAN'.

    Your UAN and UAN status will be sent to your registered mobile number.
