    How to update address in Aadhaar card online with and without proof

    Synopsis

    As Aadhaar card can be submitted as a proof of address, it is important that the address mentioned is correct and up-to-date. If you want to update the address in your Aadhaar card, you can do in online as well. This can be done even if you do not have proof.

    There are two ways to update address details in your AAdhaar card.

    You have to make sure that the details in your Aadhaar are correct and up-to-date. This is because Aadhaar number has to be mandatorily quoted while filing income tax returns and while applying for a new a PAN card. Other than this, if you are availing a subsidy or grant from Central and/or State government, you will have to provide your Aadhaar number.

    There are two ways of updating the address in your Aadhaar. One is by visiting an Aadhaar enrolment centre/Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Click here to read how to update address offline and correct all other Aadhaar details) and the other is updating it online by visiting the UIDAI website.

    Here is a look at how you can update your address details in your Aadhaar via the UIDAI website. You can update your address details even if you do not have proofs.

    If you have address proof
    Follow these steps to update the address in your Aadhaar card online:
    Step 1: Visit uidai.gov.in
    Step 2: Under the 'My Aadhaar' tab, select 'update your address online'.

    Step 3: A new tab will open on your screen. Click on 'Proceed to update Address'.

    Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number/Virtual ID, captcha code. Click on 'Send OTP'. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent on your registered mobile number. This OTP will be valid for 10 minutes.
    Step 5: Enter the OTP in the required row and click on login.

    Step 6: Click on 'Update Address via Address proof'.

    The webpage will show you current address details. You will be required to fill the fields with the details to be updated in English as well as in Local Language (if you opt for it). You can also allow UIDAI to translate the address to your local language. As per the UIDAI website, currently it is available in 13 languages: Assamese, Hindi, Oriya, Urdu, Bengali, Kannada, Punjabi, English, Malayalam, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, and Telugu.

    While correcting/updating the address, you will have to give the complete address. The Aadhaar letter with the updated address will be delivered at the given address only.

    You can click on the preview button to see how the address will be shown on the Aadhaar card.

    Further, you can include guardian/parent/spouse names as part of the address. Under the Address correction box, select the appropriate C/o details. However, according to the UIDAI website, this is not mandatory.

    Step 7: Upload the original colour scanned copy of the address proof. You can also click the photo of the address proof and upload it directly. As per the UIDAI website, there are 45 documents that are valid as proof of address for updating the address details. Some of the commonly used address proofs are passport, bank statement/passbook, post office account statement/passbook, ration card, Voter ID, driving license, electricity bill /water bill/Telephone landline bill/credit card statement/ gas connection bill (not older than 3 months), property tax receipt (not older than one year) etc. You can also use the passport of your spouse as proof of address.

    Step 8: Ensure that the data entered by you on the portal is correct in English as well as local language (if opted for). Submit the request if the details are correct. Once successfully submitted, an update request number (URN) will be generated. URN will help you track the status of online address update. You can also download/print the acknowledgment copy.

    If you do not have address proof
    To update your address without proof, you will need the Aadhaar number of the person who will act as a verifier for you. Further, the verifier's Aadhaar number should have a mobile number registered with it. As per the UIDAI website, the Aadhaar address of your address verifier (a family member/relative/landlord) will be used to update your Aadhaar, after the verifier's consent and authentication.

    Follow the steps below to update the address details without address proof
    Step 1: Visit uidai.gov.in
    Step 2: Under the 'My Aadhaar' tab, select 'update your address online'.
    Step 3: On the new webpage, click on 'Request Validation Letter'.

    Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number, captcha code and click on OTP. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. The OTP will be valid for 10 minutes. Enter the OTP and click on login.

    Step 5: A new tab will open where you will have to enter the Aadhaar details of your verifier and click on send request.

    Step 6: You will find the following details in the window that will open after clicking on 'Send Request':
    1. Your Request for Address Validation Letter has been initiated and an SMS has been sent to the Address Verifier's mobile for his/her consent.
    2. You will receive a confirmation SMS after the Address Verifier gives his/her consent.
    3. You will receive a link via SMS. By opening the link, you can login again.

    Step 7: Your address verifier will be have to open the link sent via SMS and give his/her consent to use the verifier's address as your own address. Once the link is opened, the verifier will be required to enter the OTP (sent separately to his/her registered mobile number) to give his/her consent to use the address.

    Step 8: Once the consent is given, you will receive an SMS containing a link and service request number (SRN). Go to the link and enter SRN number, captcha code. Click on 'Send OTP'. An OTP will be sent on your registered mobile number.

    Step 9: Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number and click on login.

    Step 10: The webpage will show you the address that will be updated on your Aadhaar card for future correspondence. Give the consent in the tick box and click on Submit.

    Once the request is successfully submitted, a validation letter will be sent to the address containing a secret code. The UIDAI has extended the validity of the code from 90 days to 180 days. Once the validation letter is received by you, you will be required to enter this on the UIDAI website. Follow the steps below to complete the process:

    Step 11: On the UIDAI website, click on 'Update Address online' under the 'My Aadhaar' tab.

    Step 12: Enter your Aadhaar number/ Virtual ID, captcha code and click on generate OTP. Enter the OTP and click on login.

    Step 13: On the new webpage click on 'Update Address via Secret Code'. Enter the six-digit secret code received by you and click on 'proceed'.

    After this, the UIDAI will start the process of updating the new address in your Aadhaar card. Once this process is complete, the Aadhaar card with the new address will be sent to the address (mentioned in the updation request) via post. You can also download the Aadhaar card online containing the new address.

    Points to note
    • Updation of address on the UIDAI website is free of cost.
    • As per the UIDAI website, the turnaround time for updation is 90 days.

    Yours given information is useful but it’s all a rosy picture and the ground reality is totally different I am waiting for the address validation letter for cover 90 days and counting keeping my fingers crossed.
