iOS 13 has it all: Highlights of Apple’s next gen smartphone operating system

Apple gave a glimpse of its upcoming smartphone OS at its annual developer conference (WWDC). ET Wealth lists out some of the best features, which could be a big boon for iPhone users.

1. Dark Mode

This is one of the most requested features when it comes to Apple iPhone. With iOS 13, Apple has finally given a system-wide dark mode option to its users. This option will be available in settings and can be turned on/off as per user’s choice. To start, the dark mode will be available in the home screen dock and Apple’s own apps.

2. Sign-in with Apple

Apple announced its own ‘Sign in with Apple’ option for logging into third party websites and apps. Just like the sign in with Google or Facebook options on various sites/apps, you will now see the option to sign in with Apple. You can log in using your Apple credentials and Apple will even give an option to share a random email address instead of your actual id. There will also be option to authenticate using Face ID/Touch ID.

3. Overhauled photos app

The photos app will get a number of new features. The big change is improved organisation via machine learning. Your best photos will be highlighted with larger thumbnails while duplicate photos/screenshots will be hidden. A number of new editing tools will be available and you will be able to see a before/after photo for easy editing.

4. Find My

Find My is the new name for the lost iPhone tracking service in iOS 13. It combines the features of Find My iPhone and Find My Friends to enhance the tracking ability. With this feature, it will be easy to track your lost/stolen iPhone even if it is switched off. Apple will use Bluetooth Beacon beaming technology to ping the location of nearby iOS devices to detect the approximate location of your lost device.

5. Location privacy

Apple plans to add strict privacy rules for location sharing. iOS 13 will give user control to choose if an app can access the device’s location while using the app or it should ask next time for permission. If apps try to access your location via WiFi or Bluetooth in the background, you will get a notification and option to turn off their access.

6. Look Around in maps

Look Around is the new feature of Apple Maps which is similar to Google Maps Street View. You will be able to view street level photos of a location in the Maps app with seamless transitions. This feature will be available with the new Maps app which is expected to be available in the US by end of 2019 and other countries will be added in 2020.

7. Improved video editing

iPhone users will finally get better video editing controls with iOS 13. Up till now, the only editing option available was to trim the video length. With iOS 13, users will be able to edit various elements like exposure, brightness etc. as well as add filters. In addition, you will be able to crop and rotate the videos as well.

8. Enhanced typing experience

With the screen size becoming larger on iPhones, it has become difficult to type with one hand. With iOS 13, Apple is adding a new QuickPath feature using which an user can type by swiping on the keyboard letters. This can be done with just one hand making it easier to use the phone. Apple will also be improving the cursor movement and text selection on iOS 13.
