UK study finds minorities at higher risk of COVID-19 death

  • People from ethnic minorities have died from COVID-19 in larger relative numbers in England than their white compatriots, according to a study published by health authorities Tuesday.
  • The Public Health England report hinted at reasons for the discrepancy but didn't offer any recommendations. The government didn't offer any solutions, prompting concerns that people from black, Asian and other minority backgrounds will still face a disproportionate risk if there is a second spike in the coronavirus outbreak.
  • Dr. Kailash Chand, a former deputy chair at the British Medical Association, said the report could be viewed as a ``whitewash'' for failing to deliver recommendations.

UN urges billions in aid for Yemen as virus ravages cities

  • The United Nations on Tuesday called on countries to raise at least $2.4 billion for Yemen, where more than five years of war have pushed the country's health care system to a state of collapse with little capacity to test or treat those infected by the coronavirus.
  • Saudi Arabia, which co-hosted the U.N. pledging event, has vowed to pay half a billion dollars in aid for Yemen this year, $300 million of which will be funnelled to the U.N. and related aid agencies.

Delhi govt receives 4.5 lakh suggestions from people on reopening of city's borders

  • The Delhi government has received around 4.5 lakh suggestions from people in the last 24 hours on the reopening of borders with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, an official said on Tuesday.
  • Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday had announced sealing of Delhi's borders for a week amid the rising coronavirus cases in the national capital and sought suggestions from Delhiites by Friday to reopen the same.
  • He said all the suggestions will be analysed and a final decision on the matter will be taken later this week.

Thane records 397 fresh cases

In UK, drug trial results expected in early July

  • The first results from the world's largest randomised trial of drugs to treat COVID-19 patients could be available in early July, one of the scientists leading the UK-based study called Recovery said on Tuesday.
  • The first data from the study, which is testing a selection of existing drugs, is likely to come from a type of steroid called low-dose Dexamethasone and used to reduce inflammation, said Martin Landray, professor of medicine and epidemiology in the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford.

  • China's aggressive testing of about 10 million people for coronavirus in Wuhan, the first epicentre of the virus outbreak, has not revealed new confirmed COVID-19 cases but 300 asymptomatic carriers, officials said.
  • A total of 300 asymptomatic patients were found after 9.89 million people were tested in China's worst-hit city Wuhan with no confirmed COVID-19 cases, the city government said on Tuesday.
  • The mass testing was carried out at a cost 900 million yuan (USD126 million), it said.

West Bengal to set up 15 more hospitals

  • Amid the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases following the return of migrant workers, the West Bengal government has decided to set up 15 more dedicated hospitals for coronavirus patients, a senior official said on Tuesday.
  • A directive in this regard has already been sent to the state health department, which would soon set the ball rolling for the project, he said.
  • Currently, the state has 69 dedicated hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients. Of them, 16 are run by the government and the rest by private entities.

Assam cases cross 1,500-mark

  • The number of coronavirus cases in Assam reached 1,513 on Tuesday after 28 more people tested positive for COVID-19, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
  • Of the 28 new cases, five returned to the state by air, 12 are from Nagaon, 10 from Golaghat and one from Jorhat district, the minister said.
  • Forty persons have been discharged from hospitals after recovering from the disease, he said.

Testing lab not needed in every district: Maha govt to HC

  • The Maharashtra government on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that COVID-19 testing facilities need not be set up in every district, as the outbreak is largely confined to urban or semi-urban areas.
  • Besides, hospitals in many districts can not be upgraded quickly enough to set up coronavirus testing labs, it added.
