Mobile phones and components worth Rs 11.5 lakh crores will be produced in India in the next five years under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Electronics and IT said here on Saturday. "Under the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme, around 22 companies have applied. These companies will produce mobile phones and components in India worth Rs 11.5 lakh crores in the coming five years, out of which products worth Rs 7 lakh crores will be exported," Prasad said while addressing a press conference.
After going through disruptions in supply chain and curtailed domestic production, the Indian smartphone market is now showing encouraging signs of revival that sets it on a potential course for market recovery for over 40 per cent in the second half this year, according to a new report.
Telecom minister RS Prasad is scheduled to hold a briefing later today (August 1) on the applications for the PLI scheme, which aims to incentivise large electronic manufacturers to set up production bases in the country for the local and global market.
The proposals submitted by the companies to the Ministry of Electronics and IT to avail benefits of the Production Link Incentives (PLI) are expected to create 12 lakh employment opportunities -- 3 lakh direct and around 9 lakh indirect jobs, a source told PTI.
Counterpoint Research, in a report, said the nationwide lockdown of almost 40 days led to almost zero shipments in April that contributed to the decline. "Still, it was one of the least affected segments and reached its highest ever share in the overall India smartphone market, contributing more than 4 per cent in total smartphone shipments," it added.
