  • The decision, taken by the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will give respite to farmers and also help them take a call on which kharif (summer) crop to grow as sowing picks up with the arrival of southwest monsoon.

The state government has decided to increase the area under maize cultivation from 3.95 lakh acres last year to 7.41 lakh acres in this season, with the twin objective of shifting towards water resistant alternate crops to conserve the fast depleting ground water and coping with the shortage of labour amid Covid-19.

The Haryana government has announced an incentive of ₹7,000 per acre for non-paddy cultivation, while Punjab is urging farmers to go for maize instead of paddy.

The biggest increase is in oilseeds, under which area has gone up by more than six times. The area under pulses has increased by up to three times. Central India, which has received the heaviest rainfall in the country this season, is a major area for these crops.

Prices of the grain, which is largely consumed by the poultry feed and starch manufacturers, have remained firm for the past two years because of poor weather and damage caused by pests. Foreign firms such as Louis Dreyfus, Cargill, Cofco, Olam and Glencore, and other companies including Suguna Feed, Roquette, Godrej Agrovet and SKM Animal Feeds were importing maize.

The Centre will provide 50% subsidy on the transportation of fruits and vegetables if prices fall below threshold levels, government officials said.

The Telangana-based firm this week said revenue will rise as much as 20% in the financial year started April 1, compared with an average 15% forecast by eight analysts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to scrap royalties paid to Bayer AG for Monsanto’s genetically modified cotton will also help Kaveri Seed, the company said.

Keeping in consideration the large-scale post monsoon developments and the sowing reports from various parts of the country, NBHC Pvt. Ltd. has come up with its Final Rabi Crop Estimates for 2019-20.

Kashmir’s Agriculture department has also approached University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology in Srinagar, asking them to submit a report on types of sweet corn varieties that could be grown in Kashmir. For now, the department imports sweet corn seed variety from Holland.

Maize is an important component of poultry feed and for making biofules. It is also used in food processing. It is also used to make the shell of capsules, starch and as part of the food processing industry for making sauce, gravy, pudding, pies and others. The state govt won the Krishi Karman Award this year for improvement in maize production in the country.

Unseasonal rains have rendered the land soft, and mechanised harvesters can’t do the job. The lockdown has meant labourers who could manually harvest the crop have either not come or have gone back to their villages.

Weather conditions are "very likely to become favourable from June 1, 2020" for the monsoon onset over the southern state of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement.
